Name: That One - Whatever name it had before, it has long since been forgotten and no longer applies. It lacks the intelligence to call itself by any term. Those who know of its existence simply refer to it as That One.
Age: 113
Gender: It
Sexuality: No
Appearance: That One is a monster, plain and simple.
It is the standard of what most wild Remnants have become and the epitome of what the weak squishy humans fear most as they hide in their sanctuary. It is huge, but its exact size fluctuates. Its limbs cannot support its full weight when standing straight up, either. It is never as large as an elephant, but it is generally larger than even the tallest human.
It has long limber limbs with extra joints. Its body is the result of spontaneous and abrupt mutations, and the absorption of other living creatures. As a result it has grown extra bones, joints, flesh, organs, and muscles that humans are not supposed to have. Over the years many of its life, extra limbs have been grown. However they are mostly feeble or just get in the way of its main limbs and have been broken and even severed by its own movement. Only the most useful and strongest of grown limbs can survive for long on its continually mutating body, ensuring its strength.
Many feeble limbs and extra body parts have grown on its thick hide. It can move most of these, but usually they are in poor condition from its own rough treatment or they are limited in their movements. Most notably of its extra body parts is a small upper torso that is on the front of its chest, complete with waist, chest, arms and head. This extra upper torso is completely fused to its chest, and cannot move much aside from some sickening writhing and squirming. It also has a nose and mouth on this extra head, but its throat is connected to an extra set of lungs and vocal cord. It seems to moan and cry out independently of the main body of That One. It also has other organs and things of that nature, mostly non-functional.
It has many extra organs, and even other heads grown here and there. Many of its eyes are functional in that they can see, but many are incapable being 'moved'. In other words, they are lazy eyes. That One's mind simply cannot handle all the information the many eyes send him, as most of these eyes are looking in different directions. So instead of giving him 360 degrees of vision, the extra eyes have only served to further agitate and disorient him. It cannot even close many of these eyes as well, and its really quite maddening. Assuming there was any sanity left in him to be driven insane.
Its original nose is nothing more than too small holes on its face, much like the holes of a human skull, however there is flesh around it and it has grown the necessary organs to sense smell with in these holes and many others like them around its body. Its smell is much more acute than the normal human sense of smell.
As a result That One has evolved to not rely on its vision, using mostly scent and sound instead.
That One's original limbs have grown extra joins as well, but remain its most powerful. Its many extra joints and long limbs have made its movements a bit awkward, but what it lacks in grace it makes up in raw power and monstrous ferocity.
Aside from extra limbs and body parts, it has many sickening growths of flesh and hide that never seemed to have any purpose at all, and if they did their purpose was lost long ago. Much of its twisted body is constantly twitching and convulsing.
Most notable of these extra growths are two large long appendages that grow from its back. They might be arms, or legs, but they are too deformed to be called anything useful like that. They are more like the featherless wings of a fallen angel.
His hide is thick and tough like armor, but as a trade off for high endurance it has lost most of its sense of touch. The one thing it can feel is pain. If hit is strong enough to damage the flesh beneath the hide, or pierce through its hide, it will feel pain. Its hide is thick and hard, but it has many exposed areas that are not protected by this. If you can't break through the hide, you can do damage to these weak spots.
The color of its hide varies from area to area. There are patches that are pale white, while other parts are gray, and still others are bruised purples, blues and blacks. Patches of red exposed muscles and bones, or broken feeble limbs and other extra body parts are standard fare as well, adding a myriad of crimson reds to its color scheme as well.
His original mouth has grown long and wide. It has grown many extra teeth and even extra rows of teeth in this mouth. Many teeth are crooked and misplaced, but all of its teeth are distinctly human in shape. Even the sharp ones designed to cut meat are square, with only a few canines being sharp.
Because of its awkward movements and balance, it generally can be seen walking on all fours, or fives... or sixes... or whatever it has at the time.
The bottom of its spine seems to have grown into a short tail.
Skills:
- Darwin Wishes He Was Wrong: That One's greatest ability is its continually evolving and mutating body. Its body grows and develops with the sole purpose of surviving. However, this does not happen instantly, it is a trial and error process. Most of the extra body parts it grows are feeble or ineffective. However, according to Darwin's law, and survival of the fittest, these limbs will probably not last long. It is not invincible, as eventually its body will simply run out of materials and nutrients to build new cells. When this happens, it must either feed, or its ability to continually evolve will stall completely. Assuming it can keep itself fed, this power does not simply regenerate what was damaged. If it was broken off or lost, it is assumed to have been too weak, and instead of replacing it, its body will attempt to grow a stronger version. However That One's body does not know what a stronger version is, and so it must go through its usual trial and error process. For example, if you cut off a finger, what you might see is parts of a misshapen, deformed hands with several awkward fingers begin to grow out of the wound, until at least the the wound is closed. The body will attempt to replace what was lost with something that is better, but it will not always actually be better.
- If You Can't Beat 'Em, Eat 'Em: Keeping in theme of becoming the fittest, That One's second ability is to take in and absorb other creatures. It will only absorb creatures that it considers to be worthy specimens. It absorbs other creatures by growing flesh around the target and enveloping it in a flesh cocoon. The process of growing this cocoon is incredibly slow, and the flesh of the cocoon is weak and easily broken out of. So the ability can only be used on corpses, or knocked out creatures, or possibly willing candidates if there ever would be such a foolish creature. Once the cocoon is completed, another long and slow process begins where new nerves are grown into the target and the two bodies are slowly made one. The purpose of consume worthy opponents is to gain their strength, however it rarely works as ideally as you would want it to. It has absorbed other Remnants hoping to steal their great powers, but so far this hasn't worked and it only has the two it has now. Sometimes it does this to replace important areas that were damaged too severely. For example if its chest was broken open by a strong opponent that it barely killed, then it might absorb this strong opponent to replace the missing flesh in its chest.
Origin:: Its hard to believe that this creature was once human, but it was. That One was around fifty when it first began to change and mutate uncontrollably. It has survived all this time since then, by the use of its powers.
Summary: A monster that wanders the wastes, reminding all who venture there why humanity hides in their sanctuary.
Relationships:- Those Who Hunt The One: - Steady Food Supply – Those Who Hunt That One are an elite team of highly specialized Infantry type New Children. They are created and collected and then sent into the wastes to kill That One in greater and greater number each time. Of course, so far they have always failed. Each time their entire squad has been wiped out, but the hope is that one day a New Child in this strike group will be strong enough to finish That One off for good. So far That One has only stayed to the wastes, and seems too ignorant to find Arcis, but he is considered dangerous enough to warrant the expense needed to create these strike teams.
Inventory:- Corpses: When not hungry, which is pretty rare actually, That One usually kills something (anything) and then carries at least one corpse with it for the future, assuming it can find prey.
- It doesn’t seem to covet objects of any kind, lacking the intelligence to do so.
Weapon:- Its body and its mindless rage are all it needs.
History: That One was once a human who lived to be around fifty years old before mutating due to infection.
As a human, it believed in nothing more than the survival of the fittest. It had started with nothing as a poor lower class citizen, and had to work its way up. Every day it worked to further its career. It was ruthless and did not care how many coworkers it had to step over in order to reach high enough to obtain the next promotion. It climbed the corporate ladder until it was rich and successful in business and in the stock exchange. Finally, it had what it had wanted.
It was rich, powerful, and alone.
It was among the first wave of the infected populous. Its mutation was drastic and abrupt right from the beginning, and it lost its sanity and intelligence in the process. Out of luck, or perhaps out of sheer ability, this creature has managed to survive to this very day.
The government of Arcis first discovered it when a party of humans and New Children were sent out to scout for a location in which a new fort might possibly be set up. The group was armed to the teeth and well equipped, but still, the entire team of New Children were wiped out. As they were slaughtered and devoured, some managed to radio back to their human handlers. The human team made it their objective to collect intelligence on this Remnant. They accomplished this using stealth and caution, but determined that they wouldn’t stand a chance against this monster, and made it their mission to return Arcis with intelligence on this fearsome Remnant.
The Human handlers all returned alive, not really having fought anything as usual. However the site of the monster as it devoured what remained of the elite New Children team was so terrifying that they could only refer to the monster as That One. The plan to set up a new city or fort in the area was quickly abandoned after this encounter. Since then That One has become infamous among the military and considered one of the major threats keeping humanity from reclaiming the surface.
Special strike teams have been developed, comprising of New Children soldiers, but none have been successful so far.
See The Light:- Simple – It rarely goes wanting. Human beings, and those like them, sometimes go their whole life wanting more and more, and as soon as they get what they want, they turn their eyes to the next thing they have to work for. As a human, it was the epitome of this kind of pathetic human, consumed by greed. As a mindless Remnant, it does not covet or envy any longer. It only has its simple needs, but for it even those are hardly ever satisfied. Still somehow, it seems to be able to move forward.
- Predator – That One has a Predator mindset. When it on the hunt, it is quite fearsome.
- Self Reliant – That One needs no one and nothing, other than food. It does not feel loneliness.
- Territorial – It is able to memorize the lay of the land quite easily, just from its experience through them and the different scents and sounds in the area.
- Dedicated – When That One decides to do something, it does it. It is not lazy, it doesn’t put things off till later, it gets things done.
Fear The Dark:- Selfish – That One cares only for its own survival, and nothing else.
- Vengeful - Despite not feeling sadness or happiness, it can feel anger. Anger is more useful than sadness, but its can be all consuming at times. If something hurts That One, it will retaliate in full force. Though mostly this is out of pure desire to survive.
- Stubborn – When That One decides on something, it rarely changes its mind.
- Ignorant – It is plainly just lacks intelligence, perhaps even the capacity for it. As such, it cannot speak or understand speech. It also doesn’t understand simple concepts like ‘flammable’ or ‘avalanche area’, and that can put it in danger. Much like certain dinosaurs, there is no victory for That One. It will simply eat and consume until there is no other life is left. Then it will starve to death, assuming it is not killed before it can accomplish this.
- Cruel – It simply lacks the intelligence to have compassion or kindness.
Give It To Me:- Being Full.
- Eating Things.
- Getting Stronger.
- Being left alone.
- High Places
Get It Away:- Pain
- Being wounded.
- Having to retreat.
- Starving.
- Dying.
In My Nightmares:- Its life is pretty much a nightmare.
- Running out of food.
- Fire.
In My Dreams:- Never feeling hungry again.
- Never feeling pain again.
- Never having to worrying about death again.
