 Arcis: a subterranean city that serves as humanity's last stronghold, buried beneath a Surface that now teems with frightening, once human creatures called Remnants, and hostile environments.
The city is run by an absolute rule government party titled the Parliament, consisting of former leaders and descendants from a variety of former Surface countries.
Most of the knowledge humans had gained throughout their generations was carried down to the underground city, and resources like electricity and agriculture still exist in moderation, though heavily monitored by the Parliament. A variety of animals brought down from the surface are kept and farmed in a government monitored institution, as well. Water is filtered from underground springs, and the city has a system of vents that draw purified air down from the surface to keep the flow of oxygen at safe levels.
The city itself is separated into four districts: the barren, but casual Western District, the elegant, well-off Eastern District, the industrial, government heavy Northern District, and the grimy, crime-ridden Southern District. Originally, this was in order to best make use of and handle limited resources, but the districts have also become symbols of status and class.
Due to low average lifespans and high stillborn and infant mortality rates, the total remaining human population has fallen below the 1,000 mark. Because of this, a new technology that blends the DNA and remains of deceased humans, animals, and technological programming to create a new kind of life form, the New Children, is becoming popular as a way to meet various demands, ranging from companionship, pleasure, protection, and hard labor. The opinions on this movement vary greatly, though, ranging from those who believe that they're yet another example of man's resourcefulness, and those who find them grotesque and frightening. While the movement has created more stability and convenience, it has also created more unrest and division in the already fragile cage that what remains of humanity now calls home.
