Wars. Pollution. Natural disasters. The society in the mid-2000's already had plenty to worry about, but it wasn't anything foreseen that brought about the calamity that everyone feared in one way or another. It was nothing more than what become known as a freak accident - a large scale chemical spill from a plant researching a new biological agent meant to one day be put to medical uses.
At first, the spill blew over, being cited as an unfortunate but non-consequential slip-up. But the research on the chemical had only just begun, and it wasn't long until unexpected side-effects started spreading from the source of the spill. The chemical was an infectious mutagen, capable of spreading from one person to another and disfiguring anyone who's bloodstream it entered.
The people who had been exposed began to loose their human identities, slowly transforming both physically and mentally into what could only be identified as beasts. Violence spread along with the terrifying, chemically based infection at a pace far faster than anyone could've predicted. Before long, humanity was beginning to melt away into nothing but spilled crimson and ever increasing hordes of these once human mutants, which came to be dubbed Remnants.
In a desperate effort to save what remained of the human race, a sterile and sealed-off underground safe-house was constructed in the shape of a large city - mankind's final stronghold, Arcis.
It's been 63 years since then.
Stricken by unhealthiness and trouble re-producing, humankind continued to wither even in their subterranean burrow, with the total population falling below the 1,000 mark. With so few people, the needs and demands of what was left of society could no longer be met, and even Arcis risked failing.
That was why New Children, given the title affectionately by their original designers, were created. Containing a mixture of DNA and material from deceased humans and animals, and held together and enhanced with programming, they were an entirely different kind of life form. Some called them a sign of hope and man's resourcefulness even in the face of blight, and others called them ghastly and grotesque. Despite the original feelings of affection and hope poured into their creation, the New Children quickly became hardly anything more than controversial tools. And while their conception created a new level of convenience, the city paid for it with an increasing divide in it's already small population.
Nevertheless, they seem to have become the main focus of Arcis' governing party, the Parliament, much to the dismay and bewilderment of many citizens. Some civilians cry out for the Surface, saying that mankind's only hope lies with finding a way to return to the world above ground. And others call tyranny, claiming that Parliament needs to be replaced and the New Children destroyed in order for the city to find its own peace again. And with Remnants slowly starting to break through Arcis' barriers, and some New Children beginning to perhaps find wills of their own...how long will it be until Arcis collapses and takes what's left of humanity with it?
